Coaches, Should you choose a Niche?

Introduction

So you're a coach, and you're thinking about specialising. Should you? A client recently asked me this question, and the answer is yes, but it depends on your goals right now.

Easier to market

One of the most significant benefits of having a niche, you'll be able to market yourself easier. By marketing yourself as an expert, people will be more likely to hire you over someone less knowledgeable and experienced. As a result, your referrals will increase, and so will your reputation as an expert in your field.

Imagine you are someone looking for coaching if you find a coach who specialises in a niche. They will speak to you, know your areas of difficulty, pain or problem, and their area of expertise and experience reassures you they understand you and can get you where you want to go or what you want or need at an affordable price point.

As a coach, you will be viewed as the go-to person in your niche. The more people who know you and what you do, the more clients start coming to you. This is because of word-of-mouth marketing—coaches in other niches refer clients to you when they need your specific coaching services.

The other benefit of choosing a niche is that it helps build credibility, expertise, and trust among potential clients. When someone knows what kind of work they need, they might think that it's easier to find someone specialising in that area rather than a generalist who can do everything (and therefore probably won't competently do anything).

Allows you to focus your energy on the right people

If you're a coach, choosing a niche means that you can focus your energy on people who want to be coached by you.

Remember, people don't look for a coach because they want to experience coaching. They want a coach to help them transform or achieve new goals, so they want someone who understands what this new place looks and feels like so they have the goal in mind throughout the process.

People refer you more easily.

People are more likely to refer you if:

  • They have enquiries or clients they can't help, and they know it's your area.

  • They know you are an expert in the niche.

  • They know that you provide excellent coaching services for this problem.

Choose a niche, and you'll find it much easier to promote your coaching business.

Promoting your coaching business will be easier if you choose a tribe you want to help.

Why?

Because you'll be able to focus your marketing on the right people, you won't waste time and money on people who don't need what you offer. Instead of spending hours a day looking for clients, you can spend that time working with the clients who want what you have to offer.

Suppose there's a community of people with similar challenges or interests. In that case, promoting yourself as someone who can help them solve their problems can quickly lead to referrals from other group members.

Conclusion

If you feel that being niche isn't for you, then take the time to reflect on why this is. If serving a niche market doesn't fit your vision for your business or doesn't feel aligned with your values, perhaps you need variety after being in a corporate role, or you want to experience different sectors to see what you like, this is ok. Ultimately, it just makes creating a prosperous business harder. It would be best to do what feels right for you, as your passion for what you do is your most significant selling point.
